Prayer Vigil PDF Print E-mail

Why a Prayer Vigil?

That’s a good question! Another good question is “What’s the good of a prayer vigil?” The answer might just be found in the meaning of the word “VIGIL.” It is of Latin derivation meaning “wakefulness.” AHHHH…now we start to see something.

A prayer vigil is a period of purposeful sleeplessness or observance for the purpose of praying during the time of the vigil.

Jesus asked the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane to be “VIGILant” in prayer with him before His betrayal, trial, passion and death. Jesus wanted his friends to be near him in his hour of great struggle. They tried but fell asleep.

Okay, so why are we doing this? I mean can’t we just pray at home. (Of course you can but do you pray for an hour straight at home?) No, I rarely, or never, spend a solid hour at home praying. But is coming to church at some strange hour in the middle of the night or a more reasonable hour in the morning or afternoon going to transform me? (Well it might; it might have impact you would never know unless you tried it. So why not try it?)

Here are some reasons why to participate in our prayer vigil:

  1. 1.You will be still and know God and that God is present with you.
  2. 2.You will concentrate on God and not yourself.
  3. 3.You will put busyness aside and lose track of time -- touching eternity.
  4. 4.You will make breakthroughs as you feel challenged, incapable and then strangely enabled by the power of the Spirit to pray an hour.
  5. 5.You will be part of the church of every age praying in unity for God’s kingdom to come and to come through us in this our time appointed by God.
  6. 6.You will be interceding, for others, and for
  7. 7.You will be enriched and energized in your prayer life moving forward.

Sign up for one the hours at the Connection Table or on the Connection Card. You will receive electronically some brief devotional materials to read. When you come to church at the hour you have chosen during the Vigil you may choose to use the prayer guide we have prepared for you. You will pray individually, but at each hour there will be at least one CTS Elder present and probably other pray-ers who have chosen the same hour. You may use either the Sanctuary or in the Gethsemane Prayer room. Sit wherever you’d like or use the kneelers for some of your prayer time.

Jesus said “Could you not tarry (wait) with me for an hour?” Let’s tarry with Jesus at our Prayer Vigil.

Shevet Achim PDF Print E-mail

Joshua Miles from Shevet Achim our Special Guest on April 30th

Shevet Achim is one of our six Mission Partners located in Israel. Their mission is to serve children throughout the Middle East who have congenital heart defects by bringing them to Israel to receive lifesaving treatment in the hospitals located in Jerusalem.

There logo is taken from Psalm 133:1 "How good and pleasant when brothers dwell together in unity." This is so fitting because Shevet Achim is a Christian community uniting Palestinians and other Moslems with care provided by Israeli doctors and nurses in state-of-the-art Israeli hospitals.

Joshua is the son of the founder of Shevet, Jonathan Miles. He will share in both services bringing greetings and updates from Israel as well as a word from the Word.

Might you be interested in hosting Joshua while he is with us? Could you spare some airline miles to get Joshua to Atlanta (he is stateside, not in Israel, at this time). If you can do either please contact me or Shari Kappel at the church office.

VBS will be June 12-16, 2017 from 9 to 11:30 am.  This year’s program is titled, “Where Jesus’ love is ONE of a kind.”  The Weird Animals VBS experience is unlike anything your kids have ever done.  As they are surrounded by God’s Word, the reality of God’s love gains new meaning and relevance to their everyday lives.  Plus, they’ll have an amazing time trying out new games, songs, awesome science experiments, and more!

Many different opportunities will be presented this year including a live animal experience, a service dog presentation and pony rides.  We will welcome Wildlife Wonders from Cleveland, GA.  This group presents an interactive educational experience like no other.  What six animals will they bring to show us?  Maybe an armadillo, or how about a chinchilla, or a joey?

We will finish off the week with a hot dog celebration.  Invite a friend to join you.

Register your children early; you won’t want them to miss this unique experience.

Cost:  To help cover a portion of the cost of VBS for your child we ask for a $15/per child suggested donation. If you use the online registration form, you can make your payment through PayPal. If you use a hard copy registration form, please submit the registration fee with the registration form for each child.  Make checks payable to "Christ the Shepherd" and write VBS in the memo please.
